Local vs cloud media

When to upload to Slate and when to link a local file.

Quick start
  • Cloud — shareable, survives reloads, uses your storage quota.
  • Local — instant, private, but the link is dropped when you close the tab (browser security).
  • Look for the LOCAL LINKS LIMITED pill in the player if you're on a local file.
Details

Browsers do not let web apps hold a filesystem handle across sessions in a way that's safe to rely on. That means:

  • Every time you close the tab or refresh, a local link needs to be re-opened. Slate remembers the path so you're re-picking, not re-finding.
  • Cloud media re-loads automatically for you and your teammates.

Use local files when the cut can't leave the building; upload to cloud once you're ready to collaborate. Markers, bids, and thumbnails are stored either way — only the video itself is affected.
